4th Anniversary of Comrod on Mars
Today marks the fourth anniversary of the Perseverance rover making a successful landing on Mars. After a seven-month, 300 million-mile journey and a flawless landing, Perseverance has been busy the past four years conducting scientific research and collecting data around the Jezero crater on the red planet.
Comrod is proud to have worked with the Norwegian Defence Research Establishment (FFI) on the RIMFAX ground penetrating radar system installed on the Perseverance. Comrod designed the antenna used by RIMFAX, which is mounted near the rear of the rover.
As Perseverance transits across its area of study the RIMFAX antenna transmits frequencies from 150 – 1200 MHz into the ground and then detects the resulting reflected signals that return to the system, providing centimeter-scale resolution of the geologic structure at depths of more than 10 meters (30 feet) below the rover, allowing scientists to search for evidence of past life hidden below the planet’s surface.
Since the mission started, RIMFAX has been used by scientists on Earth to make several discoveries, from unexpectedly tilted underground rock formations to confirming ancient dried lake bed sediment in 2024.
We look forward to seeing what Perseverance discovers as its mission to Mars continues over the coming years.
